Greetings and welcome to The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division (YLD) Law Student Division. Thank you for your interest in our organization.
I am Kirsten Williams, and I am honored to serve as the 2018-19 President of The Florida Bar YLD Law Student Division. In this role, I serve all 12 law schools across the State of Florida in their efforts to fulfill the Law Student Division’s mission and purpose of assisting the YLD in furthering the goals of The Florida Bar, bridging the gap between legal professionals and law students, and providing law students with practical experience before entering the legal profession.
The Law Student Division is comprised of a 72-Member Board of Governors, (6 Governors per law school), who collaborate with The Florida Bar, the YLD, law school administration, staff and professors and local legal professionals to complete impactful efforts such as the Mentoring Program, “Raising the Bar” community service, pro bono service opportunities, professional development, and practical legal skills workshops.
As a third-year law student, I have experienced first-hand the challenges and obstacles that law students face while trying to integrate into the legal profession via internships, jobs, etc. I have also had the opportunity to overcome many of those challenges by identifying my strengths and improving my areas of opportunity based on techniques and experiences that the Law Student Division has afforded me since I joined the organization in 2016. I also obtained incredible mentors that helped guide me and challenge me to become my best. It is my hope and goal to ensure that other law students share in similar experiences that allow them to exceed their own expectations and relentlessly pursue academic excellence and success within their personal lives and careers.
I invite Florida law students to become a member today. Joining the YLD Law Student Division is free and only takes a few moments. A benefit of your membership is having the distinct opportunity to network with Florida attorneys, judges, other legal professionals, and your peers as you take great strides to solidify your future career.
We understand that there is a difference between the study of law and the practice of law, and we aim to ensure that students are properly trained prior to graduation. Take a moment to view our “About Us” section of our site and make sure you sign up to become a Mentor (legal professionals) or Mentee (law students) here.
It is always our goal to respond to law student needs and to determine programming and other efforts to meet the needs of the ever-changing legal profession. We welcome your suggestions, feedback and comments regarding our programs at your school. Please visit your school’s Board of Governors page on our site and do not hesitate to contact them or me with questions, comments, or suggestions. I may be contacted via email: YLDLSDPresident@gmail.com. We sincerely welcome you and are excited that you wish to become a part of the YLD Law Student Division’s journey.
